Transition Reactions in the Endings Phase

Based on the findings outlined in "Survivors",  I have outlined in the chart below the reactions that might be observed by each of the groups at the first stages of the Bridges Transition model.  It is the point at which the "triggering event" has occurred and the person has to come to grips with the "End of the Status Quo" and which is also referred to as the "Endings Phase".

WAIT & SEE

RIDE IT OUT

·       Proactive

·       Make the situation work for them

·       Work quickly through the transition process

·       First response is vocal and emotional

·       Move rapidly through shock and denial but get stalled at the anger phase

·       Some see change as a “personal affront” and experience personal hurt with each new announcement

·       First reaction is shock often followed by silence

·       Numb, shut down in denial and get stuck in this very early stage of transition

·       Silence masks their emotions and others may think that they are doing OK
